Why You Should Edit Photographs?
There are many reasons to edit a photograph. By editing a photograph, you can do following things with the photograph::
1. Adjust the size
2. Adjust the contrast
3. Adjust the brightness
4. Crop it by deleting unnecessary portion
5. Improve the sharpness
6. Put some text in it
7. Combine two or more photographs
8. Convert to Black and White or Single color
9. Adjust the color saturation
10. Add some effects
11. Many many other things.
To edit photographs, you require a photo editing software. So just have one from free or paid versions of photo editing software available on internet. I have used Photoscape for editing the photographs you are watching in this article.
In this article, I am giving 3 important and most used things in editing photographs: Resizing, adjusting brightness and contrast, and cropping.
How to adjust the size of a photograph
When you want to upload your photograph on your Hub, you need to reduce the file size of your photograph as you do no need big size photographs there. Small file size photographs are uploaded quickly.
You can reduce file size of the photograph by 1. resizing it 2. While saving the photo, choosing low number of DPI and 3. Reducing the quality of the photo.
What I do?
While editing photographs for Hubpages, I always resize the photographs to a height/length of 450 megapixels, and the ratio of height and length is generally 3:2
I save the photographs to 72, 96 or 120 DPI, and quality to 95%
Generally my photographs are between 60 KB to 1.2 MB
How to adjust the brightness and contrast of a photograph
If the photograph is dull or dark, you can adjust the brightness and contrast. To do it with using the Photoscape, open it and follow these steps:
1. Select Editor mode
2. Choose the photograph you want to edit from the left side menu
3. Click on Bright, Color tool at the bottom
4. Increase the percentage of brightness and contrast by moving respective buttons to the right side slowly. Watch the photograph while doing it. When you think it is correct, click on OK button
5. Save the photograph
How to Crop a Photograph?
You can remove unnecessary portion of a photograph by using the crop tool. Here is an example of cropping a photograph. Above is the original photograph and below is the cropped one. Note that both the photographs are of same size, but the cropped photograph gives closure look of the monkeys.
To crop a photograph, open it in Photoscape, then click on Crop button. Now follow these steps:
1. Move the cursor on the photograph
2. Left click on the point from where you want to crop it and drag it diagonally to right bottom side
3. Click on Crop button (The big one)
4. Save the cropped photograph.
In my next article on this subject, I will write about other features of editing, which will cover improving color saturation, sharpening and putting text to the photograph.

Thank you very much for these tips. I'm definitely going to get photoscape and work on my photos! Voted UP!

i need this for my website.

to share with us.
Vote up useful & interesting
Good information. Thanks.
Regarding the resizing, I believe 72 DPI is the standard for the web. Depending on the image, sometimes when I change the DPI to 72 first, the image size reduces to a desirable size (e.g. 600X800).
For editing, if you want something more than the basics (which I do, I find basic editing programs very unsatisfactory) you can buy an older version of Photoshop used on ebay for a very reasonable price. A couple of years ago I purchased Photoshop 7.0 (it was about 3 versions old) for $25. I use it ALL the time.
(Photoshop is about $600 new).
Great hub material and advice. I have used much of what you share and can vouch for it all. I don't use it much, however my wife, the web designer, certainly uses and practices these pointers on a daily basis and that is how I learned.
I've tried different version of editing software (both free programs and paid programs through free trial versions), and for me there is no alternative. If cost is the obstacle, I provided the alternative in getting a used copy that is a few version old. The learning curve is a little steeper with Photoshop (but nothing that anyone who is posting hubs can't handle), but once you learn a few basic tools, it is very easy. And you can get as fancy or as simple as you want.
Maybe somebody else who likes a really really simple program can offer a suggestion of one they like?
Man, These are some cool tips. I use Photoshop for the same purpose. I am sure your tips will be helpful to many.
Thumbs Up! Just shared this with my followers and on Social Networking and bookmarking Sites. Thanks for SHARING!
I still haven't spent the time to learn how to use Photoshop, but I use other free photo editing sites which brighten dark images, crop, etc. It can make a real difference in the final effect of a picture as you nicely demonstrated in this hub. Voted up and useful.
Hi Jainismus, these are useful tips, the final effect of a photo can make a big difference to the overall look of the hub.

These are great tips. Many times I am unhappy with a photo, and a few simple tweaks on a photo software program makes it beautiful.
