Jain Birds Hospital: A Hospital For Birds at Delhi
Jains are well known for their compassion towards animals and every other living being. They do not kill or cause to kill animals. That is why they are staunch vegetarians.
Jains have opened thousands of animal shelters all over India. In these animal shelters they look after rescued, sick and injured animals.
Jains have opened some hospitals especially for birds. People admit injured and sick birds in such hospitals, where the ‘Bird Specialist’ Doctors treat the birds.
One of the most famous hospitals for birds is the Birds Hospital at Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi.
This hospital is situated at the famous Red Jain Temple Complex opposite to the Red Fort. The Jain temple is known as Digambar Jain Laal Mandir. The temple is few centuries old and the bird hospital was founded in the temple complex in 1956.
The hospital has separate wards for different species of birds. There is an Intensive Care Unit for Serious Birds. Moreover, there is a research laboratory.
Generally, people admit wounded and sick birds to this hospital. As it is a charitable hospital, the treatment is free, and the expenses are covered from donations. About 30000 birds are treated every year.
When the birds get well, they are freed. The birds are not returned to their owners.
To commemorate this unique hospital, a First Day Cover was issued by Indian Post. The cover depicts two rare birds, the hospital and the red Jain Temple on it.
