Getting more and more followers to your Hubs is a very important thing. When you publish a new Hub, you followers are the first to know about this. Many of them read your Hub and if they like it, they share it or make a comment on it. Because of this, their followers get to know about your Hub. Thus your Hub is spread like a virus.
More followers means more traffic. Suppose that you have 100 followers you reach to 100 followers. Suppose that the average number of followers of your followers is 100, then your extended circle of followers is 10000.
Now suppose you have 1000 followers and the average number of followers of your followers is again 100, then your extended circle of followers is 1,00000. Here your Hubs get more chances of getting commented and getting shared.

How to Get More Followers?
Getting followers is not an easy task. You can not get a high number of followers in short time. It is a long term process. However, you can speed up this process by following these steps:
1. The most important thing you have to do to get followers is to be present on Hubpages regularly. Your presence is the most important thing to get followers. When other Hubbers will see you, only then they can consider to add you. If you are not there, that is of no use.
To show your presence, follow these steps:
1. Write regularly.
2. Make comments on Hubs written by others. The comments should be at least in 2-4 lines. Just saying 'Good Hub' is not recommended.
3. Take part in the forum discussions
4. Start new topics in the forums
5. Answer the questions asked by the new Hubbers
6. Ask question about the things you do not know
7. Ask some questions even if you know the answers. This helps others, and you show your presence.
2. Write important things about yourself in your Hub profile. Write about your work, achievements. It will attract some followers.Your profile should be in detail, but not too long. Also it should be never in 2-3 lines.
3. Add an attractive photograph of yours to your Hub profile. If there is no photograph, many people will ignore you.
4. Follow other Hubbers. When you follow others, some of them will follow you. I suggest you to prefer to follow High score (80+) Hubbers having at least 100 followers. You can find such Hubbers in the Hubbers section of your page. But remember that they will follow you only if your Hubs are interesting, useful and they see your presence regularly. Adding online Hubbers is more useful.
5. Use other methods of attracting traffic to your Hubs. More traffic will give you more followers. (See related Hubs at the end of this Hub)
So start to apply above suggestions to get more and more followers. Once you get a considerable number of followers, the number will increase rapidly without much efforts.

You give some sound advice. However, may I also add that when you follow someone, make sure you comment or read their hubs first. Otherwise, you hubscore will go down if you just follow people you haven't read.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to HP so I'm still only in the beginning of my learning curve. However, I have one question. I read yesterday in someone's Hub that they recommended to HP to close another person's HP's because he/she was using too many backlinks. I noticed that backlinks were recommended in one of the related items above. Are backlinks safe or are they only safe if you use them once in a while? What is the rule for backlinks? Maybe there should be a HP about backlinks or should I just read more HP tutorials? I'll be looking for you response. Thanks again. Please stop by and read one of my HP.

while things like following those with a lot of followers occured to me after taking a look around - they also have quite interesting texts - i also like to hop hubs for less connected people. There are some diamonds hidden, I am sure. You very nicely put some really effective ways of increasing the number followers together.
When reading your calculation about reaching an audience of 100k people I thought that it would be interesting to find a mathematician who could integrate the fact that of these 100k followers quite a few might be connected to eachother in the calculation. That brings me to a question I will pose now ;) How many users do the hubpages have?

There are about 232,000 Hubbers on Hubpages. I got this figure from the Hubbers section of Hubpages. I think a big percentage of this number is non-active and not present on Hubpages regularly. But even if there are just 25% Hubbers active, that number i.e. 58,000 is great as all of them are writers and writer-come-readers
This is a well-written hub on gaining many followers over a period of time. I totally agree with you. Patience is a virtue which is important when it come to gaining followers provided one write interesting and useful hubs, participate in the community like commenting, answering questions,sharing others' hubs etc and make one's presence felt and noticed by many others.

Internal backlinks are safe only if they are related to the subjects.
I think, 70 percent of sharing is of quality content. Rest are really important.
